SUMMER
TRAINING HEADS TO THE HILLS
Panther
Striders hit the hill tops to view a smokey
summer solestice for 2008.
June
24, 2008
Some
of the Panther Strider summer training crew
headed up into the Antioch hills as shown
here below. The smoke filled air from one
of the hardest fire seasons on record hid
the sun from view in this year's climb to
the top for their running session debut
for summer 2008. There have been worse air
days during XC season, but June 2008 will
go down as one of the hardest hit from over
800 reported fires throughout the state,
many caused by recent lightning strikes.
Even the sun, as it was setting on one of
the longest days of the year, was turning
orange-red at 8:23, then to a dark red,
before it was completely blacked out just
before the official sunset time of 8:38pm.
Even so, the Striders took advantage of
the evening and made it real.

PANTHER
CROSS COUNTRY TEAM SETTING GOOD MARKS, PR'S
2007
Panther XC continues to be setting season
& life-time PR's in many dual meets
and invites
October
21, 2007
The
XC season would not be anything without
the goal of setting season or life time
Personal Records
(PR's). There have been a lot of these set
over the course of the last few weeks -
as the hight of the seaosn is upon us. Looking
back a few weeks, the team had several dual
meets - with mix results in the BVAL. The
teams should fair well and finish on the
plus side by November 2, come BVAL finals
at NEWHALL PARK. This will be the last BVAL
finals held in the Diablo Valley region
for the Panthers for quite sometime, if
not for good. The BVAL, DVAL, & MDAL,
all leagues in which Antioch XC has been
a part of since 1959 will come to a close
in Central Contra Costa County because in
2008, the BVAL moves east and for the first
time in Antioch's history - they will not
be competing against any school from over
the hill in league action. The BVAL version
#5 will all be east county schools.

Team
AHS takes a post-race day group shot at
the Castro Valley Invite.
After
the Viking Opener, the team headed to the
Castro Valley Invite, Newhall Park for the
BVAL Center Meet, then had league action
with Pittsburg and Freedom at Antioch High,
in which they won all races and continued
the 30 year-winning-streak against Pittsburg.
After that tri-meet, the Panthers headed
to Castro Valley again for the famed CV
Trojan Invite at Canyon Middle School. After
that it was the tri-meet against Liberty
and DLS/Carondelet at Shadow Lakes Golf
Course in Brentwood. This past weekend -
the Panthers headed out to the central valley
invite at the dried up lake of Lodi and
competed at the Eagle Invite - with several
race champions crowned - Tyree Mack (09)
in the JV BOYS at 10:17 for 1.9m, and Mathew
Humphreys-Martin (08) in the varsity boys
race with a sizzling time of 16:25 for the
5k course.

Varsity
Boys take a proud second behind the very
good valley team of Sheldon-Sacramento.
The
Antioch XC team has been battleing with
Sheldon over the last few years - with split
results for each team.

XC SEASON QUICKLY BLASTS INTO HIGH GEAR
AT INVITES
Panther
Striders run at Ed Sias, Contra Loma Classic-X,
and Viking Invites, all in a week's work
September
18, 2007
The
AHS Panther XC team headed into high gear
with three invites in an eight day span
to open the first week at school. First
it was the season opening Ed Sias Invite
in Martinez hosted by College Park and Campolindo
High Schools. Then it was off to Contra
Loma for the tenth annual CLC - Antioch's
own little invite. Then on Saturday September
15, it was all the way up to Santa Rosa'
Spring Lake park for the annual Viking Opener.

Senior
boys celebrate lake side after winning their
division at the Viking Opener over Castro
Valley and Liberty.
(L-R) Ned Randle, Eddie Quintero, Jacob
Robertson, Mathew Humphreys, and Christiaan
Perez, all Class of 2008.

CAR WASH GETS THE TEAM OFF AND RUNNING IN
2007
X-Country
crew get off running fast in training and
in raising funds for season ahead
August
25, 2007
The
Panther Striders headed out on the streets
of Antioch to garner their wages for the
2007 season. They did OK, but the fun outweighed
any dividends from the labor washing cars.
In fact - there were so many car wahses
in town, it took it's toll on the XC crew's
earnings. Despite that, the team had a fun
day screaming on the corner and getting
"hosed" while cleaning some of
the town resident's cars. More pictures
to come after the downloads - so stay tuned
for that link.

The
girls parade on the corner of E. 18th Street
to convince drivers to stop on in for a
washing.
(L-R) Olivia (09), Dana (09), Angelica Regalado
(07).

Even some of the varsity guys were working
the corner to get cars into the washing
corral. (L-R) Mathew Humpreys-Martin (08),
Bryan Dwyer (10), and Christiaan Perez (08).
Humphreys and Perez placed
1st & 2nd respectively in a 5k race
out in Discovery Bay earlier in the day
(wearing race shirts).
More details and link on those results to
follow suit..
MT
TAM CAMP-OUT A SUCCESS ONCE AGAIN
The
22nd annual excursion to Marin County stacks
up as one of the best
August
20, 2007
Many
of the 2007 XC crew took to the Marin trails
of Golden Gate National Recreation Area,
Mt Tamalpais State Park, and Muir Woods
to get in some great trail running over
four days. The camp-out dating back to 1986
has been at the same camping grounds of
Mt Tam 20 of those 22 years. In 2005, the
group ventured up to Yosemite, and last
year to Samuel P Taylor. Even those two
parks are beautiful, nothing stacks up against
the running trails of Muir Woods and Mt
Tam.

Monument.
ALAMEDA
RUN FOR THE PARKS IS A RUN FOR THE FALL
Antioch
top stars tackle streets of Alameda and
run 6.2 mile race
August
5, 2007
Some
of the varsity crews of the Panther Striders
went out on a cold windy summer morning
in the down town streets of Alameda to tackle
the long running 10k - benefiting the parks.
The flat histoirc streets of Alameda were
closed off to run this summer classic in
old-towne. 10k
Results here .

The
'07 Panther X-country team took to the streets
of Alameda running the Run for the Parks
10k. Leading the way for the Panthers once
again this year was Senior Christiaan Perez
in the 36 minute range. (L-R) Head Coach
Mike Amorosa ('88), Chris Slatten ('10),
Eddie Quintero ('08), Jacob Robertson ('08),
Christiaan Perez ('08), Bryan Dwyer ('10),
Veronica Regalado (10), & Coach Amanda
Amorosa ('97) , who ran the 2- mile with
her little assistant Vincenzo Amorosa ('25).

LAKE
LOOP SUMMER RACE RUNS INTO A BIT OF A SNAG
Antioch
sumer lake loop runs into a bit of a snag
on first running of 2007 summer
July
18, 2007
All
the different high school and adult runners
that ran the 2.13 mile course around Contra
Loma Reservoir took a turn for the worse
as they encountered an obsticle 3/4 of the
way thru the time trial. Apparently, one
of the park's rangers decided to do some
trail work at 7:00pm that evening - same
time as the time trial-race. In the 12 years
we have been doing this time trial - there
has never been a hang up like this! As the
runners ran at top speeds of 5:00 minute
mile pace, the sign was not visible by the
fast running athletes coming thru their
normal route back to the dam. Some were
forced to run the varisty hill above, making
it a 2.68 mile course, according to Mike
Zygancio (AHS XC 1972) GPS watch.

HISTORIC
RIVERTOWN FUN RUN INDEED MAKES HISTORY
Antioch
July 4th fun run makes the record books
by becoming the hottest on record!
July
4, 2007
The
Antioch cross country teams from Antioch,
Deer Valley, and Freedom high schools, along
with some other local adults and children,
braved the century degree heat. What boasted
as one of the hottest road races in America,
did not seem to detour the 55 runners who
got up the courage to run the streeets of
Antioch!
It
was the hottest race on record for the HRFR,
at a scorching 103 degrees. The previous
record was 97 degrees, set in 2005. All
other years were in the low 90's, so, there
might be something said about global warming!?
Nevertheless, the race was hot, but not
the times of course. Winning the 5k, in
a slower than normal time of 18:31, was
Deer Valley graduate Tony Palermini. The
woman's division was taken by recent Antioch
graduate and top Strider over the last four
seasons, Mellie Regalado, timing 21:56 for
the 3.1 miles. The 1 mile run was taken
by 11 year old Sean Kelly in 7:20, the only
time for the day to make the HRFR
record books. Right behind Kelly
was the girl's champion Alicia Rickli, (12)
in 7:23.
For
complete results in this year's hot running
of the 2007
Histoirc Rivertown Fun Run.

The
2007 Historic Rivertown Fun-Run in Antioch
was led early on by Panther Strider Mathew
Humphreys-Martin (#20), shown here at the
half mile mark. Just to the right of Mathew
in the black shorts is Deer Valley's recent
graduate and top standout miler Tony Palermini,
who eventually won the 7th annual gig in
downtown
Antioch. Palermini ran a school
record 4:18 this past track season for 1600
meters.

PANTHER
STRIDERS HIT THE HILLS AT SUMMER SOLESTICE
Panthers
successfully scale Loma Peak at 8:38 pm
to run on the longest day of the year!
June
21, 2007
The
Antioch Boys & Girl's Panther Striders
succesfully scaled one fo the highest peaks
cresting around Contra Loma, their favorite
hiding place. It was quite the group this
year scaling 'Loma Peak' at a peak elevation
of 505 feet. It was a great evening of views
and running, with all the Striders successfully
running to the top of this peak above all
of Antioch. Regardless, it was another fun
evening for all who were there on the hill.

The
crew takes a scenic photo with the sun just
dipping into the Pacific Ocean just over
Christiaan Perez' right shoulder. It was
another successful trip up the peak for
this annual summer adventure by the Striders.
